2005–2012 (3rd Generation)

These cars packed a strong 3.5L V6 and had a reputation for a smooth ride, but a few recurring issues started to crop up: 

  • VVT-i Oil Line Leaks: Toyota used rubber lines in the variable valve timing system. Over time, those lines could crack or burst, dumping oil and risking engine damage if not addressed quickly. 
  • Melting Dashboards: In hot climates, the dashboard material could soften and get shiny or sticky. Not only did it look bad, but it could also cause glare while driving. 
  • Steering Clunking: Some drivers noticed a “clunk” when turning the wheel. This was often traced to a worn-out intermediate steering shaft. 
  • Excessive Oil Usage: Especially in high-mileage cars, burning through oil between changes became a concern. 
  • Door Lock Problems: Faulty door lock actuators meant you’d hear clicking sounds or find that locks weren’t responding reliably. 

2013–2018 (4th Generation)

This redesign brought better fuel economy and sharper handling. Still, no car is perfect, and a few bugs showed up: 

  • Frozen Touchscreens: The infotainment system sometimes froze or lagged, especially during cold starts. 
  • Rear Suspension Clunks: Knocking sounds from the rear were often due to worn bushings or old strut mounts. 
  • Transmission Hesitation: Some Avalons were slow to shift gears. Usually, it was a dirty throttle body or outdated transmission software. 
  • Noisy Sunroofs: Owners of higher trims with panoramic roofs occasionally reported creaking and rattling noises. 
  • Water Leaks: Poor seals around the trunk or rear glass led to unwanted moisture inside the cabin. 

2019–2022 (5th Generation)

These years brought hybrids and new tech features, but not everything worked perfectly. 

  • False Brake Alerts: Warnings about the Brake Hold or Pre-Collision systems would show up randomly, even when everything was fine. 
  • Fuel Pump Recalls: Some models had defective pumps that led to stalling. Toyota issued a recall, but not all owners were aware.
