1998–2007 (100 Series)

This generation introduced more creature comforts while keeping the off-road chops. But a few quirks have shown up over time: 

  • Tired Front Suspension: Off-roading and heavy loads wear out the torsion bar suspension early. Ball joints and bushings can also sag with age. 
  • Active Height Control (AHC) Headaches: This hydraulic suspension system often malfunctions, especially in older models. It can cause uneven ride height and a bumpy feel. 
  • Front Diff Leaks: Gaskets and seals dry out over the years, leading to slow leaks in the front differential. 
  • Cracking Dashboards: Particularly in 2003–2006 models, sun exposure can make dashboards brittle and cracked. 
  • Starter Wear: V8 engines in this series are known for worn starter contacts, leading to sporadic or failed starts. 

2008–2021 (200 Series)

Toyota dialed up the luxury in this generation, but new tech came with new problems: 

  • Air Suspension Issues: Much like AHC, the newer air suspension tends to leak or fail outright. Ride height sensors and compressors are common culprits. 
  • Excessive Oil Use: Early 5.7L V8 engines (especially 2008–2011) often consumed oil between changes. 
  • Secondary Air Injection Failure: A common check engine light issue linked to emissions equipment. Moisture or carbon buildup causes pump failure. 
  • Brake Booster Concerns: Models from 2014–2016 occasionally suffer from weak braking due to internal faults in the booster or master cylinder. 
  • Evap System Codes: The vent valve on the fuel tank wears down and can trigger an emissions code. 

2022–Present (300 Series - Imported Models)

Not officially sold in the U.S. (yet), the newest Land Cruisers are showing up via private import. We’re already seeing a few trends: 

  • Turbo Sensor Faults: Twin-turbo diesel versions sometimes throw errors due to boost sensor inconsistencies. 
  • Glitchy Screens: The modern infotainment system is sleek, but freezing and lag are common complaints. 
  • Fuel Sensitivity: These newer diesel don’t like low-quality fuel. Poor diesel can cause DPF and injector warnings.
