2007–2008: First-Generation Hiccups

The earliest Patriots experienced quite a few growing pains: 

  • CVT Transmission Problems – These early Patriots came with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that was prone to whining, overheating, or total failure. Some drivers lost drive power altogether before reaching 100,000 miles. 
  • Water Intrusion – Leaky door seals and poor roof seam sealing led to soggy carpets, especially after storms.

  • Clogged Sunroof Drains – For models with sunroofs, drainage issues led to moisture pooling in the interior. 

2012–2014: Design Tweaks, Mechanical Quirks

While these models got some cosmetic updates, mechanical gremlins continued to appear. 

  • More CVT Problems – The CVT remained a pain point, with many still failing prematurely under everyday use or highway loads. 
  • Wheel Bearing Noise – Humming noises at highway speed often pointed to bad wheel bearings needing early replacement. 
  • Coolant Loss – Some 2.4L engine models had head gasket seepage, which led to undiagnosed overheating until serious damage occurred.

2015–2017: Final Production Years

These Patriots got a 6-speed automatic in some trims, which helped—but not all was resolved. 

  • Harsh Gear Shifts – The 6-speed wasn’t always smooth. Rough downshifts and premature torque converter issues were still mentioned by owners. 
  • Idle Stalling – Infrequent but frustrating, some vehicles stalled at red lights or while stopped. The fix often involved idle air control valves or software updates.
