2001–2003 (First Generation)

The Prius made its debut in the U.S. with a bold vision, but early models had some challenges. 

  • Battery degradation: The original hybrid batteries wore out quickly with high mileage. 
  • Inverter overheating: A weak cooling system sometimes caused inverters to fail prematurely. 
  • Throttle body carbon build-up: Buildup led to stalling or rough idling.

2004–2009 (Second Generation)

This is when the Prius became a household name—and new issues started to appear. 

  • Hybrid battery replacement: These models often needed a new battery between 120,000–180,000 miles. 
  • Coolant pump failures: Inverter coolant pumps often failed without warning. 
  • Steering clunks: Worn intermediate shafts created loose-feeling or noisy steering.

2010–2015 (Third Generation)

A sleek redesign and more space made this Prius even more popular. But no car is perfect.

  • Brake actuator problems: Failure of this part disrupted both ABS and regenerative braking.

2016–2022 (Fourth Generation)
